Every one knew how laborious the usual Method is of attaining to Arts and Sciences; whereas by his Contrivance, the most ignorant Person at a reasonable Charge, and with a little bodily Labour, may write Books in Philosophy, Poetry, Politicks, Law, Mathematicks and Theology, without the least Assistance from Genius or Study.

Laputan Logic*
Fanciful. Preposterous. Absurd.
Where am I?

Posted on Saturday 17 June 2006

Good question that.

I'm around, obviously, but as more than one commenter has already noticed, blogging hasn't recommenced as promised. I'm still pretty busy with a project I started nearly a year ago and the pressure is really on now to make a delivery so I won't be able to give Laputan Logic all that much attention for the next little while. I may be able to manage a weekly post, maybe. We'll see.

Encounter, M.C. Escher, 1944

Anyway, while I've got your attention I thought I'd mention that Boynton put me on to Sternest Meanings, an online genius anagrammatician which does a remarkable job of wringing quirky alternative meanings out of whatever is typed into it. For example, if you type a phrase like Intelligent Design into the talk box you'll get back:
Deleting listening.
Which pretty much sums it up for me.

On the other end of the so called "controversy" we have a bunch of Darwinians seeking a pithy way to sum up evolution in 10 words or less. The winner at the moment appears to be Differential heritable variation via stochastic and deterministic forces but for my money and for straight-out human readability and comprehension, I don't think you go past this little insight from John Hawks:
No evolution means equal offspring for everyone!
